Free Cruise Perks: The Real Ones, Explained

Every cruise sale seems to promise something free: free drinks, free Wi-Fi, free gratuities, free onboard credit, even free fares for the third and fourth person in your cabin. These free cruise perks are real, and they can be worth a lot — but each one has its own fine print. This site takes them one at a time, explains how they usually work, and shows you how to decide whether a perk beats a simpler, lower fare.

Two kinds of “free” exist. The first is the promotion: for a limited booking window, a line adds a perk to selected sailings, and once the window closes it disappears or changes. The second is the bundled fare: some lines build drinks, Wi-Fi or tips into a fare type you can choose every day, and the “free” part is really the price difference between that fare and a basic one. A third group of lines includes certain extras in every fare. Understanding which kind you are looking at is the first step to judging it.

When do perks peak? Many lines run their most generous offers during the January-to-March booking season and around holiday sales; Wave Season tracks the big ones and Cruise Sales explains the yearly sales calendar.

The Golden Rule: Compare the Total

A cruise line can give away a perk because it is priced into the deal. That does not make perks bad; it means the only fair comparison is the total for your cabin, for the same ship and date, with and without the perk. If you would buy a drinks package anyway, a fare that includes one may be excellent value. If you drink little, a lower fare with no perks may cost less. Our page on perk or lower fare shows how to run that comparison.

Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise do this every day: we quote the same cruise several ways and show you the totals side by side. Free Cruise Perks: Quick Answers

What are the most common free cruise perks?

Free or reduced fares for the 3rd and 4th guests in a cabin, onboard credit, drinks packages, prepaid gratuities, Wi-Fi and specialty dining. They appear as limited-time promotions or as bundles some lines build into certain fares.

Are free cruise perks really free?

Each perk has a value, and lines price promotions so they make sense for them. A perk-heavy fare can be a good deal, or it can cost more than a lower fare without perks. Compare totals, not headlines.

Can I get more than one perk at once?

Often yes, when a line lets you choose several perks or bundles them. Promotions do not always combine with other offers, though, so ask what stacks before you book.

Does an advisor get the same perks as booking direct?

Line promotions are usually available through travel advisors too, and an advisor may add their own amenity. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will show you exactly what each quote includes.
