A 3rd and 4th guest free cruise is one of the most valuable free cruise perks, because a whole fare disappears for each extra person. It is also one of the most frequently misread. Here is how the offer usually works and what the free guests still pay.

How the Offer Works

Cruise fares are priced per person, normally on the basis of two guests sharing a cabin. Guests three and four in the same cabin are often priced lower than the first two even without a promotion. When a line runs a 3rd and 4th guest free promotion, it drops their cruise fare to zero on eligible sailings. Norwegian Cruise Line currently presents it as part of its Free at Sea offer — see Norwegian’s Free at Sea page — and other lines run similar promotions from time to time.

What the free guests still pay: government taxes, fees and port expenses, which are charged for every guest; usually daily gratuities; and anything they buy on board. Some lines also apply the free fare only to certain cabin categories or sailings, so read the eligibility list.

What you need: a cabin that actually sleeps four. Many inside, oceanview and balcony cabins have pull-down or sofa beds for guests three and four, but not all. Family cabins and connecting cabins are scarce on popular weeks, so book early.

When It Is a Great Deal — and When It Is Not

SituationVerdict
Two parents and two children happy in one cabinUsually excellent: two fares vanish
Four adult friends sharing one cabinGood value if you can live in close quarters for the week
Two couples who would rather have two cabinsCompare: two cabins at a lower fare may suit you better
A promoted sailing you would not otherwise chooseWeigh the savings against dates, ports and ship you prefer

Families with young children should also compare kids-sail-free offers, explained on Cruising Kids. If you need two cabins, connecting rooms and a group rate might beat the third- and fourth-guest discount; our sister site Family Group Cruises covers family groups.

Booking Tips

  • Give every guest’s age when you ask for a quote; prices and rules can depend on it.
  • Ask for the total for all four guests, including taxes, fees and port expenses.
  • Check whether drinks, Wi-Fi or dining perks cover the extra guests.
  • Confirm bed layout: pull-down bunks, sofa beds or a separate sleeping area.

3rd and 4th Guest Free Questions

What does 3rd and 4th guest free mean on a cruise?

The first two guests in a cabin pay the normal fare, and the third and fourth guests in the same cabin pay no cruise fare. They still pay taxes, fees and port expenses, and usually their own gratuities.

Is 3rd and 4th guest free the same as kids sail free?

Similar idea, different rules. Kids sail free offers limit the free fare to children under a set age; a 3rd and 4th guest free offer may apply to guests of any age. Norwegian, for example, has advertised its offer as “3rd & 4th guests of all ages sail free!”

Do the free guests get the other perks?

Not always. Some bundles cover only the first two guests or charge the extra guests for drinks packages. Check the perk rules for each guest.
