Perk or Lower Fare?

A ten-minute comparison that settles it.

Every free cruise perk competes with a simpler alternative: the same cabin at a lower fare with nothing added. Deciding between them takes ten minutes and a short worksheet.

The Four-Step Comparison

  • Price the basic fare for your cabin, ship and date, with taxes, fees and port expenses.
  • Price the perk fare or promotion on the identical cabin.
  • List what you would really buy on board without the perk: drinks, Wi-Fi, dining, gratuities.
  • Compare: basic fare plus your real spending, against the perk fare plus whatever the perk leaves out.

Whichever total is lower wins on cost; then weigh convenience. Many people value not watching a bar tab, which is worth something. Others value flexibility — a lower deposit, refundable terms or a cabin they prefer — more than perks they may not use.

Remember that onboard credit and drinks have no value if unused, while a lower fare is a guaranteed saving. Prepaid gratuities, on the other hand, are almost always used.

Three Travelers, Three Answers

The cocktail couple

They enjoy a few drinks every day and stream shows at night. A fare with drinks and Wi-Fi included is likely to beat paying as they go, and the convenience is a bonus.

The early-to-bed family

Soft drinks, the main dining room and pool days. A drinks perk would go largely unused; a lower fare, or a 3rd and 4th guest offer, saves more.

The foodie retirees

Little alcohol, lots of restaurants and long port days. Specialty dining and prepaid gratuities suit them; drinks do not.

None of these is a rule, just a way to think. Write down how you actually spend on a cruise, or how you spent last time, and let that, not the banner on the booking page, decide which free cruise perks are worth having.

Perk or Lower Fare: Questions

Why does a perk fare cost more than the basic fare?

Because the perks have value. A perk-inclusive fare is priced above the basic fare on the same cabin; the difference is what you pay for the perks.

Can I add perks later?

Sometimes you can switch fare type or add a package before sailing, but promotional perks usually depend on booking during the offer window. Ask before you book.

Do perks affect cancellation refunds?

They can. Some promotions apply only to certain deposit types, and perks may be removed if you change the booking. Read the terms.

Are free cruise perks the same as rewards points?

No. Perks come with a booking; points come from loyalty, credit card or casino programs. See Cruise Travel Rewards and Cruise Rewards Program for those.

Do perks change after I book?

A new, better promotion may appear later. Before final payment, an advisor may be able to apply it, depending on the line’s rules.
